Rothley Court Hotel - The History of the wedding venue
Rothley Court, located in Rothley, Leicestershire, boasts a rich history dating back to the 11th century. Originally mentioned in the Domesday Book, the site became known as Rothley Temple when it was established as a preceptory by the Knights Templar around 1231. Following the suppression of the Templars in the early 14th century, the property was transferred to the Knights Hospitaller, who managed it until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540.
In 1565, the estate was acquired by the Babington family, who resided there for nearly 300 years. Notably, Thomas Babington Macaulay, the esteemed historian and politician, was born at Rothley Court in 1800. The manor also holds significance in the history of the abolition of slavery; William Wilberforce, a leading abolitionist, is known to have drafted his anti-slavery bill while staying at Rothley Court.
Architecturally, the manor house reflects a blend of periods, with the main structure dating from the late 16th to early 17th century. It underwent significant remodelling in the 18th century and substantial alterations in 1894–95. The estate's chapel, originally constructed by the Knights Templar around 1240, remains a prominent feature. In recognition of its historical and architectural importance, Rothley Court and its chapel were designated as Grade I listed buildings in 1951.
Since 1959, Rothley Court has operated as a hotel, allowing guests to experience its storied past firsthand. The estate's enduring legacy, from its medieval origins to its role in significant historical events, makes it a remarkable landmark in Leicestershire.
