A Brief History of Kilworth House
Kilworth House, a magnificent Grade II listed Italianate country house, was built in the late 1880s for John Entwistle, the then High Sheriff of Leicestershire. Designed by architect A.E. Purdie, the house was a symbol of Victorian status and a hub for the county’s high society. The Entwistle family, who made their fortune in the Lancashire woollen mills, resided at Kilworth for several decades.
After passing through the hands of the Snowdon family in the mid-20th century, the house was purchased in 1999 by Celia and Richard Mackay. They embarked on a painstaking restoration project, working closely with English Heritage to return the house to its former glory, including the preservation of the stunning Victorian Orangery.
In 2003, Kilworth House opened as the luxury hotel we know today. In 2007, a new chapter began with the opening of the Kilworth House Theatre, a unique open-air theatre nestled in a wooded glade on the estate, which has since gained a national reputation for its West End-quality productions.
