Bowden Hall - The History of the wedding venue

  • Bowden Hall, located in Upton St. Leonards, Gloucestershire, is a Grade II-listed Georgian building, originally constructed as a large country house in the late 18th century, around 1770.


  • Bowden Hall was listed as a building of historic interest on October 20, 1970. 


  • The building has undergone various alterations over the years, with notable changes around the 1970s. In 1971, the Gloucestershire County Council accepted a tender to convert the mansion into a hotel with a private golf course. 


  • It was once the home of John Dearman Birchall in the 19th century, and its interiors retain some original features, including a grand staircase and a stained-glass window on the landing.


  • The mansion was purchased in 1976 by Molly & Derrick Badger and Mollie & Derrick Umney and became a hotel. It now operates as the Mercure Gloucester, Bowden Hall Hotel. 


  • The building’s architecture is characterised by a mix of Georgian and Victorian elements, with a rectangular block, large sash windows, and an impressive service wing and stable block.
